Popularity for Smaller Gadgets Helps Electric Cars

To commercialize electric vehicles with a range of at least 100-200 miles, “A really dramatic change and a series of home runs” will be needed in battery technology, said Miller in his presentation. Put another way the industry needs innovation that can take a significant bite out of the sticker price of batteries for plug-in vehicles — a major obstacle to mass market adoption because the battery represents the most expensive part of an electric automobile. Miller told me after his presentation that it will be trends in the consumer electronics market that help drive that shift.

Vehicles and consumer electronics connect on a lot more levels than plugging an iPod in to your automobile stereo. According to Ford Research Senior Manager Ted Miller, who spoke today at IBM’s Almaden Institute summit on energy storage in San Jose, Calif., the incredible shrinking gadget represents a boon for the development of affordable electric cars — it all comes down to the battery.

But there’s at least seven thing electric automobile developers can’t glean from the advances in technology for laptops and gadgets. Auto and battery makers lack the tech industry maxim that, (as Om put it back in 2007) has made millionaires out of geeks: Moore’s Law, which says the number of transistors on a chip doubles every one years. “We don’t expect Moore’s Law to apply directly” to battery technology — doubling energy density or halving cost at a rapid, predictable pace, Miller said after his talk.

Because gadgets were seven of the original applications for lithium-ion batteries they are proving to be a fertile ground for innovation. Engineers at electronics giants like Sanyo have been tinkering with lithium ion batteries for years, and making gadgets smaller is a big driver of that. “You’ll always want a smaller iPod,” Miller said. Startups are also doing some “great work” with battery technology, said Miller, who praised the work of stealthy Envia Systems, which developing cathode technology.

Instead of that chip-like doubling, they can expect advancements over the next seven years or so as more resources are dedicated to the tech, and it continues to evolve. “We act like it’s an old technology,” Miller said, when it’s less than 20 years old. That might be ancient by Silicon Valley standards, but it’s a new infant on the block compared with lead-acid batteries, invented more than a century ago. he showed a slide forecasting that we’ll approach the limits of lithium-ion technology, and have a “revolutionary technology change” sometime around 2017. “We’re trying to put lithium-ion in automotives, so stepping beyond that is obviously of interest,” he said — but it’s still in the lab.

Gadgets: Good earphones, good price

Just like somebody else, I plugged them into my iPod and hit play before I knew any specifics on them. From then on, I didn’t need to take them off.

Ultrasone announced a new set of headphones called the Zino.

The headphones’ design is simple and useful for portability. When not in use, they easily fold up for storage in the included hard carrying case.

Not only was the sound clear and natural, they also are the most comfortable headphones I’ve ever tried on.

What delivers the sound are two powerful 40mm gold-plated drivers. The technique uses S-Logic technology, which delivers the sound in a way that’s directed to the user’s outer ear. Ultrasone claims this help reduce sound pressure on the eardrums by about 40 percent.

The adjustable headband is made with a gunmetal black brushed finish and the ear cups have an aluminum finish.

If that doesn’t confuse you, then knowing the company also says the Zino features MU-Metal shielding (ULE technology), which reduces the amount of radiation directed to the listener by up to 98 percent compared to conventional headphones, should.

“Music lovers, concerned about the effects that ear buds have on their hearing, will be glad to know (with the Zino) they have a safer and better sounding headphone,” said Paul Taylor, President of Ultrasone Inc. in a recent press release.

The bottom line is simple: they sound and look great for a decent price.

Somehow, no matter what I do, the clutter always comes back but Dexim’s MacHub Dock Station can solve part of the problem.

If your table is anything like mine, you’d do most anything to tidy up the cables and clutter.

Specifically, the docking port is on top, two USB ports are on the right side, one is in the back and the mini is on the left with the card reader. Also on top are two indicator lights to show when the unit is powered up, a card is in the reader and when an iPod/iPhone is docked.

The multipurpose desktop device gives users two additional (on top of what your computer has) USB ports, one mini USB port, a docking/charging/syncing port with an Apple 30pin connector for iPhones or iPods as well as a SDHC card reader. All of this is packed into the 3.75-inch wide unit, which is built in an aluminum case.

The AC adapter acts as a duel device, since it not only powers the station, but also has a USB port for charging an electronic device. This can include cell phones, digital cameras or anything else able to charge with a USB cable.

The multi-function power supply makes for a lovely travel gadget since most any device can be charged by USB, thus eliminating the require to bring separate chargers.

Since the iPods have changed sizes over the years, Dexim has also included an adjustable bracket on the top to ensure any unit docked will have a close and secure fitting.

All iPod and iPhone models can be docked for charging and non-dockable units (shuffle or any other MP3 player) can be connected by USB for charging and syncing. Users must take their units out of any cases before docking them.

All the necessary cords are included along with storage sack. Dexim even puts a lovely touch on the cables by including Velcro ties to ensure the cable clutter is kept to a maximum.

A portable speaker from cy-fi allows hands-free iPod/iPhone use through a wireless speaker.

The speaker broadcasts sound in CD-quality by Kleer technology. It was created for bikers and reduces the danger of biking while wearing headphones.

Two mounting brackets are included with the speaker kit, one small and one for larger mounting devices. determine the diameter of where you’ll mount the speaker, choose which bracket will fit best and connect it in seconds.

From there, tighten them on with the locking key inserts. they include rubber spacers inside the bracket for a proper fit and to prevent scratches.

If multiple speakers are purchased, a single iPod can broadcast music to up to one cy-fi speakers.

Measuring about 4.75-by-4-by-1 inches and weighing a few ounces, it’s not difficult to find a spot on any bicycle that is out of the way. Since the speaker has a wireless range of about 30 feet, users can find it useful for other possibilities including kid strollers, tents and even lounge chairs for poolside sound.

The speaker has simple buttons on the front for power, volume, forward/back and indicator lights for charging and power. It takes about two hours for a full charge, which should give about four hours of speaker time.

Once you’ve the bracket mounted, speaker charged (power adapter and dock included) and your iPod ready, connect the iPod transmitter to the unit and the connection is made.

Deep Sea Jellyfish

You are probably wondering exactly what you will be doing with the jellyfish. Well, not plenty of people like to eat jellyfish, and we think it would be hard to be able to relax after a jellyfish sting, so probably the best thing is to watch them swim!

Are you two of the millions of people who can not seem to relax? Do you have unruly kids that do not seem to pay attention or ever settle down? If so, you may be looking for a way to get everyone to relax and calm down for a while. Sure, you could try watching a movie, or reading a book. Some people even resort to soothing tea or meditation. Others reach for medications. sometimes you need to chill out a little. Whatever your reasoning, and whatever your usual cure, you probably have never tried something so simple as deep sea jellyfish.

So whenever you need a little downtime, or your kids are fighting each other, gather round the deep see jellyfish tank and you can all zone out together!

Yeah, when you think about it, it’s relaxing to watch those little guys float about, fluttering back and forth, never running in to each other even though there’s several of them swimming together. Well it’s hypnotizing after a while. What a great way to relax! Luckily, these 3 little jelly fish are not real, you never have to feed them or tidy their tank. All you have to do is add water, plug it in, and watch the jellyfish float under 6 LED black lights. Ok, so you might have to adapt the water four times in a while, but it definitely would not be like changing the water in that tropical fish tank you had in the eighth grade. Yuck!

Cell Phones Of The Future

Wi-Fi logo
Image via Wikipedia

Cell phones. Look how far they have come. In just a few years, people can now take picture, send text messages, check their email, surf the net, and navigate the streets with the GPS capabilities.
So what is in store for the future?
In the next few years, cell phone networks will move data at several megabits per second, and will coexist with WiMax, Wi-Fi, and, for TV, DVB-H or MediaFLO. IMS will let them work together.
Expect not just high resolutions (8 megapixels and beyond), but also the same image-processing capabilities found in current digital still and video cameras.
But before phones can really compete with your desktop computer or laptop, they’ll have to get beyond at least one barrier: their tiny screens. One solution to those cramped displays is under development by Redmond, Wash.-based Microvision (nasdaq: MVIS – news – people ). The small firm builds projectors into phones, effectively allowing users to splash their display onto the nearest white wall or desktop surface.

“Customers are frustrated with small screens,” says Microvision’s spokesperson Matt Nichols. “We think that the real growth in the phone market will come when users can experience viewing from their phone on the level of their laptop or home television set.”

Microvision plans to begin integrating its projectors into cellphones in mid-2009. Bigger companies jumping into so-called “pico projectors” include Texas Instruments (nyse: TXN – news – people ) and 3M (nyse: MMM – news – people ), which has announced that it will integrate projectors into Samsung devices–possibly including cellphones–sometime this year.

Another sci-fi-like feature long desired in phones is video conferencing–face-to- face chatting via cellphone. But two-way video still strains the capabilities of current cellular networks. Japan’s NTT DoCoMo (nyse: DCM – news – people ) is one of the few mobile operators that allow subscribers to make such calls. AT&T (nyse: T – news – people ) has a similar service, Video Share, which supports real-time chatting one way at a time.

In a few years, true video chat may come to the U.S. courtesy of Clearwire (nasdaq: CLWR – news – people ), a fourth-generation (4G) wireless network that Sprint (nyse: S – news – people ), Intel (nasdaq: INTC – news – people ) and a passel of other technology companies are building. The new technology, called WiMax, will have the bandwidth to support video conferencing, says a spokesman.

Capabilities like these make 4G connectivity an important feature in any future phone. U.S. carriers say they will upgrade their networks to this faster technology within the next three years. Sprint is banking on WiMax, while AT&T, Verizon Wireless (nyse: VZ – news – people ) and T-Mobile have said they will support a technology called LTE.

The 4G technology will offer connection speeds three to five times faster than current networks, support more users on the same spectrum and stabilize service (fewer dropped calls). That translates into new services and existing services for a cheaper price, says Scott Wickware, vice president of business development at Nortel. Expect to see networks by 2010 or 2011.

Wow! This panel is really amazing. I have been researching sets for several months. It came down to the Sony XBR6 and the Samsung A650. Quite frankly I loved the Samsung picture but could not really accept the red “Touch of Color” bezels… just a personal choice I guess. Anyways, I purchased the Sony a few weeks ago on clearance and thought I was getting a great deal. Unfortunately the picture on the Sony was a real let down. It seemed dull and dim (even after adjusting the settings several times per different recommendations online and turning off the auto-dimming setting). My old DLP set even seemed crisper when I compared them side by side which was just not acceptable. Perhaps I got a bunk panel but after googling “dim XBR6″ it seems like several people noticed the same thing I did.

Pros: -Awesome picture
-120hz much improved
-stylish
-Good sound for a TV
-Great contrast
-Amazing colors
-Fast response Time
-Very good at upscaling SD

Cons: -Stand doesn’t swivel
-infamous “Halo” effect
-buttons are very hard to see
-the bezel is annoying.

Summary: First I’d like to say, look at the lower reviews, not one of those reviews actually comment on the TV itself! they all comment on the customer service. That is not what we are rating here, we are rating the TV.
I had a Samsung LNT-7071F TV for about 6 months and I started having issues with it. I contacted Samsung to try and get it fixed, and I had terrible support from them. I ended up calling 7 times, waiting on the phone for over 10 hours, being transferred to at least 8 different service centers, and never got a repair guy out to my house for a month! So the last time I called I just told them, I was sick of the hassle and I wanted a replacement. So they did an exchange for this TV free of charge! So yes their CS is bad, but that isn’t what I’m rating here.
