The previous years saw the proliferation of smartphones (iPhone, BlackBerry, etc.) and just recently PC tablets. In between these types of devices are mobile internet devices or MIDs, which recently got a boost, with LG’s launch of the GW990 at CES 2010. It is a mobile internet device that both have the processing capabilities of a PC and the portability of a smartphone. It features a 4.8-inch touchscreen display with an aspect ratio of 2.13:1 and a 1024 x 480 screen resolution. The LG GW990 is powered by the combination of Intel’ Moorestown platform and Moblin 2.1 (Linux-based OS), providing a superb user interface and fast mobile computing experience. The demo unit shown at CES is capable of HSPA connectivity but LG announced the roadmap of the GW990 will include LTE as telcos roll out their 4G networks. The LG GW990 is expected to be available in the market by the second half of 2010.
Sanyo is a pioneer when it comes to portable camcorders that are capable of recording at Full HD 1080p. The company once again lived up to its reputation by launching at CES the VPC-CS1 pocketable camcorder. They claim it is the world’s thinnest and lightest Full HD video camera. It’s just over an inch at its thickest (where the sensor and lenses are located) and records H.264 video at 1080p and captures 8 megapixels still images. The VPC-CS1 stores video to SDXC memory cards and has a built-in mini-HDMI port for directly displaying video and images on HDTVs. It also has three microphones that features a “sound zoom” capability that allows better audio capture from your target subjects. The Xacti VPC-CS1 is expected to be available in the market in February 2010 and the suggested retail price is a little below $300.

Google is trying to take Apple back to the 1980′s. The good news is the competition between Google and Apple will produce better technology and have more competitive prices, so the consumer is the real winner.
The Google Nexus One will be unlocked so it can be used for any carrier. This is something the Iphone (Must have ATT) is not doing.
The price for the Google unlocked cell phone is in the $500 price range.
One reason and the biggest why the Google phone is better than the Iphone is it holds at charge for at least 24 hours, and maybe more.
Dont think though you will have an installed app for Itunes on this phone.
Help out the environment as well as help yourself. Sell your personal electronics, your cell phones, laptops, computers, and other gadgets. If you are tired of your Iphone, Ipod, any old cell phone, make money getting rid of it, dont just throw it away.
The website to go to is http://www.gazelle.com/, the easiest way to recycle your gadgets.
You can also buy the used equipment as well. If you have a tight budget you may find some good deals, why pay full price if you can get a significant discount.
Staples recently updated their site. Some new elements made their site nicer, but the website still has ways to go. Today, the website was down most of the business day. This is a very bad sign that there are problems in the IT department. For a major company like Staples to have their website down more than an hour, it either means the IT department doesn’t know how host their site correctly, or there is ILL communications between the IT and business departments.
This isnt good news if you were thinking of buying their stock for 2010. This is a warning Staples is going to have a rough 2010 year.
I had to buy some paper and pens today, didnt have time for Staples to get their act together so I bought it at Office Max instead.
This issue may not be a concern at present but any benefit it would offer is a welcome development. The Blu-ray disc looks set for a boost from its present 25 GB per layer capacity to 33.4 GB per layer. Sony and Panasonic are busily working together on a new method to increase the capacity by employing a new Blu-ray media evaluation scheme called the Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation evaluation index or i-MLSE. This is a new method of estimating read error rate of discs and will still use the current Blu-ray optics. i-MSE is a complex process but recent advancements in hardware has made possible for it to be used in real time in Blu-ray discs. This development was announced at the International Symposium on Optical Memory (ISOM) 2009 held last October 2009. There was no timeline yet for the rollout but as per industry sources, Sony will lobby to the Blu-ray Disc Association, of which it is the leading member, the widespread adoption of i-MLSE.
One of the most anticipated developments in the computer industry this year is the Tablet. The tablet that we usually know is the flat surface input device where we draw images using a stylus, similar to what we do when we draw images with a pencil on a paper. The tablet PC more commonly known now is a slate-shaped portable computer with a touchscreen display that can be operated on by using a stylus or the fingertip. An external keyboard is an option and is usually connected either through USB or Bluetooth. Early applications were in specialized fields like factories, health care and restaurants. The Tablet was in recent years embraced by leading PC manufacturers such as Acer, Asus, Fujitsu, HP and Lenovo to name a few, which made it possible for the product to find its way in consumer hands. Probably the most anticipated development that brought much excitement to consumers these days is the news that Apple will be coming out with its own version of the tablet that is rumored to be called the iSlate. What worries other vendors is it is expected to somehow take a slice of the market not only from competing tablet products but also from related products like the e-book reader and netbooks.
The much-anticipated Google mobile phone Nexus One is expected to be launched this week. Google will be having a press event on January 5 at its Mountain View, California headquarters and it is widely expected that it will come out with the new phone during that event. There was no mention of Nexus One in the invitation but there is one on the Android, Google’s operating system for mobile phones. The event will be held prior to the CES exhibit that will be held in Las Vegas and this timing adds more excitement to the rumored and much-waited launch. A collation of online sources suggest that the Nexus One will have the following features – GSM connectivity, Wi-Fi capability, 3.7 inches AMOLED touchscreen, compass, accelerometer and 5 megapixels camera. How much it will cost and if it is to be offered unlocked, we may probably know before the week ends.
Finally, the long wait for the final version of the Firefox Mobile is over. It is now available for download from the Mozilla site, http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/m/, and initially supports two Nokia Maemo devices – the N900 and the N810. The beta has been tested for some time and has now the final release called the Firefox Mobile RC1. It includes all of the features of the desktop version Firefox 3.6, with many new and mobile features added. These include the Awesome Bar, Weave-sync, Addons, password manager and a lot more. One exciting feature that was specifically developed for mobile applications is the Location-Aware Browsing. When your mobile is online, your current location is established and points of interest in the vicinity will be pushed to your device. And for other mobile users not comfortable with Nokia phones, don’t get frustrated yet because industry sources said Mozilla is also looking at the possibility of developing the Firefox Mobile for Android-enabled devices.
