Sanyo is a pioneer when it comes to portable camcorders that are capable of recording at Full HD 1080p. The company once again lived up to its reputation by launching at CES the VPC-CS1 pocketable camcorder. They claim it is the world’s thinnest and lightest Full HD video camera. It’s just over an inch at its thickest (where the sensor and lenses are located) and records H.264 video at 1080p and captures 8 megapixels still images. The VPC-CS1 stores video to SDXC memory cards and has a built-in mini-HDMI port for directly displaying video and images on HDTVs. It also has three microphones that features a “sound zoom” capability that allows better audio capture from your target subjects. The Xacti VPC-CS1 is expected to be available in the market in February 2010 and the suggested retail price is a little below $300.

OK, we all got used to getting tons of new features on our iPhones everytime Steve Jobs decides to grace us with a new firmware update. Well, we’re sorry to tell that it’s not the case this time. Still, the new update does bring some important stuff, so maybe you shouldn’t avoid installing it. Unless you have a jailbroken iPhone (seriously, don’t!), in which case you should wait for the jailbroken version.
But let’s see what the new update brings, shall we? As we said, it doesn’t come with any new features, but it does fix a few glitches. The first is the bug that caused the device not to wake up from sleep at times. Then, it repairs the issue that caused the iPhone to need a restart in order to regain access to network services. Last but not least, the iPhone won’t crash occasionally during video streaming. All of these were intermittent issues, but it’s good to see them fixed, as they could get quite annoying.
Pure Digital has come out with an update to its larger Flip Ultra models, the Flip Ultra HD. It features a new video compression engine, 720p HD video recording, an HDMI output and 8GB of internal flash memory. It still has the same easy-to-use software that made the Flip the favorite camcorder of video bloggers in uploading video to YouTube and social networking sites. The HD capability is just timely for YouTube is now supporting HD and all new flat panel displays are now HDTV.
The Flip Ultra HD’s body is not as sleek as the Flip Mino but the trade off is worth it. This extra size is for the HDMI socket, so you can connect it directlty to an HDTV set to immediately watch your HD recording. The 8GB internal flash memory provides 2 hours of recording and the removable rechargeable battery provides an option to use standard AA cells. The current market price for the unit is $199 but watch out for good deals this coming holiday season.
A lot of portable HD camcorders are coming out of the market these days at very affordable prices. Kodak, being a pioneer camera company, jumped into the market last year with the Zi6, one of the earliest portable HD models. Now, they have come out with the Zx1, a slimmer and more rugged model geared for the outdoor.
Kodak has done some good work on the Zx1. It has an SD card slot that accepts SDHC cards up to 32GB (not included in the $149 price tag). The camera records directly to SD at 720p and can capture still photos! But unlike most other portable camcorder devices, this model requires a separate and proprietary Micro-USB cable to connect to a computer. The problem with this is you always have to carry around that extra cable to be able to get your videos off the camcorder. The Zx1 also comes with a mini HDMI port and cable for connecting directly to an HD capable flat panel display. The included rechargeable battery lasts about 12 hours and can be replaced by standard AAs.
Kodak equipped the Zx1 with ArcSoft’s Media Impression software. It allows shortcut upload to YouTube and editing features such as splicing and assembly of clips to come up with a finished video material. Overall, the camcorder is a great deal at the retail price of $149. Excuse the lack of SD card but at that budget price, it makes decent HD footage.
Creative Lab’s Vado HD is a slim and lightweight pocket camcorder that is small enough to fit easily in a pocket or purse. It records up to two hours of H.264 video at 720p resolution into the built-in 8GB flash memory. The large 2″ screen display makes it easy to prep for a good shot and is perfect for previewing clips onscreen. It has a flip-out USB connector that you can plug directly into your computer to upload videos into your computer and popular sites such as YouTube. It comes with an HDMI cable that lets you plug the unit directly to an HDTV set for you to enjoy your videos in 720p HD quality. This pocket camcorder also comes with the Vado Central software for basic video editing and file management.
Overall, the Vado HD camcorder offers value for money at the current online price of $124. At this price, it can be a good back-up unit for your more expensive, higher-end HD camera. The video quality is good enough and the camcorder is very easy to use. What is missing though is an image stabilization tool that is present in other pocket camcorders.
The G-Shot HD520 is Genius’ contender in the arena of new pocket camcorders. It is a low-cost compact camcorder, which can capture HD video and still photos. The recorded video image is in H.264 format at 720p HD resolution. Captured photos can be at 5MP or even at 11MP by interpolation. It has a SD card slot that can support SD cards with up to 8GB of memory. A 2.5” LTPS colored viewfinder is built in, which can be rotated up to 270 degrees to find the best viewing position.
The HD520 comes with an HDMI port and cable that allows direct viewing of captured videos and stills in any HDTV flat panel display. It is equipped with EIS (electronic image stabilizer) to minimize the effects of handshaking when taking videos. The camcorder employs Arcsoft’s Media Impression for easy menu navigation and file management. Other features include a 5x digital zoom, face detection and Z-Lighting technology that enhances the brightness of captured images under low light. Priced at $149, the HD520 is almost the perfect pocket camcorder if not for the lack of a flip-out USB jack that is a standard feature in competing models.
