Dell is Entering the Mobile Phone Market with the Mini 3i
Dell is creating a new communications division as it prepares to launch its first mobile phone in China. This development indicates how serious Dell is in entering the mobile market. The new division will develop portable devices that will include mobile phones and portable computers with embedded wireless chips. This new division will be headed by Ron Garriques, who is currently president of Dell’s consumer division. Prior to joining Dell, he previously worked with Motorola. Dell will be launching very soon its first mobile phone, the Mini 3i, in China. The Mini 3i will run on China Mobile’s OPhone open source platform, and will be pre-loaded with a number of applications like the 139Mail e-mail, Fetion chat, and digital maps for navigation. Dell has an earlier partnership with China Mobile when they developed the 3G Dell Mini 10 netbook.
