The previous years saw the proliferation of smartphones (iPhone, BlackBerry, etc.) and just recently PC tablets. In between these types of devices are mobile internet devices or MIDs, which recently got a boost, with LG’s launch of the GW990 at CES 2010. It is a mobile internet device that both have the processing capabilities of a PC and the portability of a smartphone. It features a 4.8-inch touchscreen display with an aspect ratio of 2.13:1 and a 1024 x 480 screen resolution. The LG GW990 is powered by the combination of Intel’ Moorestown platform and Moblin 2.1 (Linux-based OS), providing a superb user interface and fast mobile computing experience. The demo unit shown at CES is capable of HSPA connectivity but LG announced the roadmap of the GW990 will include LTE as telcos roll out their 4G networks. The LG GW990 is expected to be available in the market by the second half of 2010.
